01 — Why get tested

Two numbers decide your sodium need.

Sodium loss per hour = sweat rate × sweat sodium concentration. Both vary widely between athletes, which is why generic advice under-serves the heavy, salty sweater and over-waters the light one. A test pins down your figures so your plan is built on your physiology.

You don't need a test to start — the calculator estimates both from your profile. A test just makes the plan sharper. Either way, the result feeds the same place.

Know which test you're getting.

Two methods are common in Australia. They measure overlapping but different things — worth knowing so you book the right one.

At-rest

Pilocarpine forearm test

No exercise. A small forearm patch is stimulated to sweat and analysed for sodium concentration (mg/L). ~45 minutes. The number is stable, so you only need it once.

Exercise

Session / patch test

You train while patches collect sweat, with a pre/post weigh-in. Captures sweat rate (L/hr) as well as sodium, under real conditions.
